About one in four projects we scope ends with us telling the client a version of the same thing: this won’t work the way you think it will. Sometimes that means a smaller scope. Sometimes it means no project at all. Either way, we have the honest conversation before contracts get signed.

• “Overhyped custom AI with unrealistic expectations”

  We say no when clients expect a magical foundation model or breakthrough AI to fix vague or poorly defined problems. Most of the time, the solution is simpler (and far cheaper): better data pipelines, RAG, or process changes.

• “Train our own foundation model”

  Most companies asking for this don't need a custom model. They need RAG, fine-tuning, or better prompting on an existing one — usually at a tenth of the cost. We've redirected several of these conversations into much smaller engagements that actually solved the problem.

• “Over-engineer a solution to a simple problem”

  If the proposed product or feature requires far more complexity, infrastructure, or custom work than the actual problem demands, we say no. We've redirected several conversations away from heavy custom builds toward simpler, faster solutions that actually solve the core issue at a fraction of the cost and risk.
